A little about my one woman show...
The writing of Impossibly Blonde: Marilyn at 77 came out of my fifty year long fascination with the complex woman who was Marilyn Monroe.
Though mindful of her personal problems and tragedies, I was stunned by the news of her death at only 36 years. I received this news just a few short hours after it happened. At the time I was married to a photojournalist, Gene Anthony, and our phone rang in the early hours of that August morning in 1962, telling us Marilyn Monroe had died and assigning him the story. I was to write it up.
My experience of those few days surfaces in the play through the eyes of an older Marilyn who now has a somewhat clearer view of her life. Just as HER life had cast a spell over MY life, her death and the subsequent surrealism of her funeral cast its shadows. It actually altered the course of my life, sending me off a few short months later to a lengthy stay in Rio de Janeiro.
Over the years, l've continued to think about Marilyn and the culture which formed and then ultimately destroyed her. Women who grew up in the decade of the Fifties were shaped by that time and did not experience real freedom until decades later. Today, once again, many of those freedoms are threatened.
My play is about Marilyn, about the women of her time, about aging and about how far we have come, and still need to go. It is my prose poem to her; a song of love, appreciation and regret.

"I was forced to look back and remember the 60's and
Marilyn's death through new eyes. It was as if I had never really known her,
and now I was able to experience the pain and sadness she felt on a very personal level.
Maggy Anthony's performance was wonderfully rich and poignant."
